An Oxnard man is dead following a brief struggle with police Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Oxnard police were dispatched to a house in the 700 block of South G Street about 3:45 p.m. to investigate a call about someone forcing his way into a house. The caller also said shots were being fired at him, according to Sgt. Dan Christian.

Police found Fernando Herrera, 25, “acting strangely and waving a knife,” Christian said.

Herrera eventually threw down the knife. As police and emergency personnel were attempting to evaluate Herrera he tried to run away.

Investigators from the Oxnard Police Department and the coroner’s office are investigating the death.
