Carl Lanquist, an Ojai Valley resident for 72 years, died Sunday at home after a short illness. He was 82.

Born in Chicago in 1913, Lanquist moved to Santa Barbara with his family when he was 5, and then to the Ojai Valley five years later.

“Oak View was a lot different back then,” said his wife, Hazel. “There weren’t many people living there. He knew every family by name.”

Lanquist attended Nordhoff High School, but had to drop out and find work after his mother’s death in 1929. He met Hazel in 1935 and they married in Bakersfield two years later.

He worked as a mechanic and carpenter in Ventura until his retirement at 59.

Lanquist was particularly fond of fishing off the Channel Islands and owned a motorboat for many years. “He just loved fishing,” his wife said. “And he used to hunt when he was younger.”

Lanquist is also survived by his sons, George of Ojai and James of Paradise, Calif.; brothers Elmer and Bert of Bakersfield, and Eugene of Kalispell, Mont.; sisters Helen Toppings of Coos Bay, Ore., and Suzy Walston of Bakersfield, five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
