Free from their usual grunge posturing, Alice in Chains turns down the volume here with all the finesse of a Zeppelin cover band. Layne Staley’s vocals are less mannered, while the band’s acoustic noodling drifts toward the misty mountaintop during “Got Me Wrong” and the pop epic “Over Now.” Some of their tunes are virtually unrecognizable--and therefore vastly improved.
