San Gabriel City Offices to Reopen After Renovations

Click your heels three times San Gabriel, you’re going home.

After almost a year of repairs, renovations and seismic upgrading, the San Gabriel City Hall offices on West Mission Drive will soon reopen, the city announced Monday.

Constructed in 1923, the City Hall building sustained severe damage in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, officials said.

The air-conditioning system was crushed, a section of one of the building’s corners fell out and a sinking tower began pulling the structure apart, said John Nowak, deputy city administrator.

The $1.3 million in federally and locally funded repairs have made the building look better than new, with such enhancements as an elevator to meet the requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act. The building also makes better use of office space, Nowak said.

To allow for the move back, City Hall offices will be closed from noon Thursday through Friday.

Phone service also will be disrupted at that time, but residents can visit the facility when City Hall reopens for its first normal business day in nine months Monday at 8:30 a.m.
