Golfer Semelsberger Repeats

Jason Semelsberger of Newhall won the 36th California State Junior Amateur golf championship Wednesday and became the third player in tournament history to repeat as champion.

Semelsberger fired an even-par 72 in the final round at San Joaquin Country Club and finished with a three-round total of 216, two strokes better than Robert Sul of Torrance and James Oh of Lakewood.

Tennis

Eighth-seeded Brandis Braverman reached the round of 16 in the United States Tennis Assn.’s national junior championships in San Jose. Braverman, 16, competing in the 18-and-under division, defeated Faye DeVera of Villa Park, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club.

Braverman recently moved from Encino to Newport Beach, but she still trains and attends a private school in the Valley.

Baseball

Shane Miranda had two hits and Don Palardy pitched a complete game to lead the L.A. Valley Tribe to a 7-1 victory over the (Rancho) Cucamonga Dodgers. L.A. Valley advanced to the championship bracket of the AAU 14-and-under national championships in Kingsport, Tenn.
