Downey Park Pool Reopens After $1 Million in Renovations

The pool at the Downey Recreation Facility in Lincoln Heights was closed all summer last year.

But after about $1 million in renovations, the pool and a new pool house have reopened to the delight of neighborhood children seeking refuge from the heat.

The pool house includes showers, changing rooms and a first aid area, said Tony Perez, spokesman for Councilman Mike Hernandez. The pool was sandblasted, repainted and resealed, Perez added.

The original pool and pool house were built in 1919 and were in dire need of restoration, Perez said.

In addition, the pool house was damaged in a 1993 fire believed to have been caused by vagrants trying to keep warm, Perez said.

The pool is scheduled to remain open throughout August, officials said.

Admission to the pool, at 1775 N. Spring St., is 50 cents for senior citizens, 75 cents for children and $1.25 for adults.

Pool hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. on weekends.
