Avery Quits After 4 Rehabilitation Pitches
Atlanta Braves left-hander Steve Avery, on the disabled list because of a pulled left oblique muscle, may have aggravated the injury after only four pitches in a rehabilitation start for double-A Greenville of the Southern League.
The Seattle Mariners activated designated hitter Edgar Martinez, a two-time American League batting champion, from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for Martinez, they placed outfielder Alex Diaz on the 15-day disabled list because of bone chips in his right elbow.
Outfielder Chris Gwynn was activated from the 15-day disabled list by the San Diego Padres, who sent outfielder Doug Dascenzo to triple-A Las Vegas. . . . New York Yankee pitcher David Cone threw 70 pitches during 15 minutes of batting practice, another step in his comeback from an aneurysm in his right shoulder.
