Long Beach State Is Target of Inquiry

Share

A five-member Long Beach State committee investigating allegations of NCAA rules violations by former men’s basketball Coach Seth Greenberg is still conducting interviews and might not complete its inquiry for at least an additional “two to three weeks,” a school official involved with the investigation said Wednesday.

The committee is reviewing allegations that Greenberg, who now coaches at South Florida, influenced the Century Club, a Long Beach sports support organization, to help pay summer-league entry fees for a team that included several 49er players and recruits.

Under NCAA rules, neither schools nor their representatives may pay players’ fees for summer league play. Doing so would violate rules concerning “extra benefits” to athletes. Greenberg has not returned repeated phone calls from The Times.
