Junior High Soccer Fields May Get Lights

Night soccer may be coming to Lexington Junior High fields by next summer.

The Cypress Recreation and Park District has tentatively approved a plan to share the cost of adding lights to soccer fields at the Orange Avenue school.

The park district is being asked to pay $60,000. The remaining $60,000 needed for the project will be raised by the private American Youth Soccer Organization.

The City Council, which also serves as the park district board, will vote on final approval of the plan after a joint-use agreement is arranged among the city, AYSO and the Anaheim Union High School District, which operates the school.

“AYSO has really done its homework in the last several years,” Marvin DeCarlo, recreation and parks director, told the council. “They’ve submitted plans and specifications and held two public meetings, and the meetings have drawn no opposition” to the lighting project.

DeCarlo said plans call for five light poles to be installed. DeCarlo said the city has been saving for its share of the project cost by setting aside money from lighting-district taxes.
