Roux Makes Edberg Latest Upset Victim

Lionel Roux of France scored his second consecutive victory over a seeded player, knocking No. 9 Stefan Edberg out of the RCA Championships 6-3, 6-4 Thursday at Indianapolis. Roux, ranked 112th in the world, defeated No. 7 Jason Stoltenberg earlier in the tennis tournament.

Tommy Haas, an 18-year-old German playing in his first tour event, also won his second match against a seeded player when he defeated No. 10 Mark Woodforde 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. A day earlier, Haas defeated No. 8 Renzo Furlan.

Other seeded players to move into the fourth round included: No. 2 Goran Ivanisevic; fourth seed and defending champion Thomas Enqvist; No. 5 Todd Martin; and No. 13 Bohdan Ulihrach.

Big-serving Mark Philippoussis, seeded No. 14, won two tiebreakers to upset third-seeded Jim Courier 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) and reach the quarterfinals of the Pilot Pen International at New Haven, Conn.

Other winners included: Top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia; No. 4 Wayne Ferreira of South Africa; No. 10 Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands, and No. 12 Daniel Vacek of the Czech Republic.

Carlos Costa of Spain lost control of a racquet as he was about to lose his match to Austria’s Gilbert Schaller at the Croatian Open, striking a line judge in the head. Costa, who lost 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, was down 0-4 in the third set and hit the ball out of the stadium and got a warning. At match point, Costa again sent the ball out of the stadium, and appeared to lose control of his racquet, which struck a line judge in the head. Umpire Gerry Armstrong said Costa will be fined, but did not elaborate.

Pro Hockey

The Mighty Ducks have signed their first-round draft pick, defenseman Ruslan Salei, to a three-year $2.25-million entry-level contract. Salei was the ninth overall selection in June’s NHL draft after playing for Las Vegas in the International Hockey League last season. . . . As expected, forward Tony Granato, who underwentsurgery in February to remove a blood clot from his brain,signed a one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks . . . Ron Hextall, who had the NHL’s best goals-against average last season, agreed to a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, avoiding an arbitration hearing . . . Goaltender Bill Ranford will make $1.75 million next season, down from about $2.1 million, following an arbitrator’s ruling in favor of the Boston Bruins.

Golf

Mike Reid, thriving in a tournament and on a course that do not fit his playing style, carded six birdies and took the early first-round lead in the $1.6 million Sprint International at Castle Rock, Colo.

Emilee Klein, who won at Boston last week, shot a five-under-par 68 to share the lead after the opening round of the women’s British Open in Woburn, England. Klein shares the lead with five players--Tracy Hanson, Julie Piers, Jenny Lidback of Peru, Alison Nicholas of England and Dale Reid of Scotland.

A felony battery complaint has been filed against two Fresno State basketball recruits, Danyell Macklin and Daymond Forney, because of a fight in which a student’s jaw was broken . . . Former Dallas Cowboys defensive star Harvey Martin pleaded no contest to felony cocaine possession in exchange for probation, a fine and participation in a drug treatment program . . . West Virginia fullback Leroy White was charged with forging $1,769 in checks to buy a television, VCR and other items in Morgantown, W.Va. . . . Former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Julio Machado has been convicted of murder and sentenced to 12 years in prison, according to Caracas, Venezuela authorities.

The team of Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley, who competed in the Olympics, is seeded No. 1 in the $100,000 Evian National Championships of women’s professional beach volleyball at the Huntington Beach Pier . . . Less than two weeks after the Olympic flame was extinguished, the crowds came back to cheer the 3,500 disabled athletes from more than 120 countries competing in Atlanta’s Paralympics . . . Ricky Craven upstaged the regulars on the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series by winning the pole for the Detroit Gasket 200 at Michigan International Speedway.

Tim Floyd, who coached an Iowa State basketball team picked to finish last in the Big Eight into the second round of last year’s NCAA tournament, has signed a five-year contract extension. . . . Troy Dumais, a 16-year-old diver from Ventura, defeated defending champion Dean Panaro on the one-meter springboard for his first national title at the National Diving Championships at Moultrie, Ga.
