Suspect Arrested in Hate Crimes
First came the hate literature against African Americans. Then the nails under car tires. Finally the paint balls hurled against homes in the Kentwood area of Westchester.
On Monday, Los Angeles police said they had arrested Daniel Allen Van Bogaert, 52, who lives in the Kentwood area, and charged him with 52 misdemeanor counts of stalking, hate crimes, vandalism and illegal possession of fireworks in connection with the hate crimes that began last fall. He was released on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in West Los Angeles Municipal Court on Sept. 5.
In March, police put a video camera in one of the homes that had been targeted, pointed it toward the street and filmed several crimes. Police obtained a search warrant for Van Bogaert’s house on Aug. 8. He was arrested Thursday.
