Paterno Ready to Kick It Off

His wide receivers are untested, his offensive line is overmatched, yet Penn State Coach Joe Paterno says Sunday’s Kickoff Classic against USC is “a good thing.”

“Win or lose, I think we’ll be a better team coming off the Southern Cal game than we might have been,” Paterno said during a conference call.

“We’ve had an opportunity to push our younger kids and I think they’re further along than they would have been. It’s probably a good thing for us.”

The Nittany Lions, ranked 11th in the preseason, return only four starters on offensive but have eight back on defense.

Yale Coach Carm Cozza will formally announce on Sept. 7 whether 1996 will be his final year in the job. The New Haven Register reported Tuesday that Cozza will step down after the upcoming season ends at Harvard on Nov. 23. Cozza, 66, has been head coach since 1965.
