A 41-year-old motorist who crashed into a tree in Irvine Center Drive late Friday has been identified as David Roger Thayer of San Diego, police said Saturday.

Thayer was driving west on Irvine Center Drive near Irvine Valley College when his Plymouth Neon smashed into a eucalyptus tree in the center divider, police said. Firefighters had to cut into Thayer’s car to remove him, police said.

Thayer was taken by helicopter to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo with a broken jaw, crushed pelvis, chest trauma and internal bleeding. He remained in critical condition Saturday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
