Marsh Bogs Down the Competition

Graham Marsh shot a five-under-par 67 to win the $800,000 Franklin Quest Championship by two shots at Park City, Utah, with a 14-under 202 total to claim his second victory of the year on the senior tour.

Kermit Zarley shot a 68 to finish second and Jack Kiefer birdied the 18th hole for a 70 and finished alone in third at 205.

LPGA Hall of Famer Betsy King was among seven players tied for the lead after the second round of the Rail Classic at Springfield, Ill.

King, who is looking for her first victory since being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995, shot a five-under 67 and was one of the huge group at 134.

Motor Sports

Michael Andretti reentered the Indy-car championship race by winning the Vancouver Molson Indy at Vancouver, Canada.

Andretti took the lead on the 19th of 100 laps on the 1.703-mile course and crossed the finish line 1.9 seconds ahead of runner-up Bobby Rahal.

John Force earned $100,000 by defeating Cruz Pedregon in the Big Bud Shootout, a special event for Funny Cars during the NHRA U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis.

During an exhibition at the same track, Elmer Trett was killed when he suffered severe head injuries after falling off his top-fuel motorcycle going 232 mph.

Track and Field

Kenya’s Daniel Komen lowered the world record for 3,000 meters by more than four seconds and Wilson Kipketer of Kenya missed the 800 mark by one-tenth of a second at the Rieti Grand Prix II meet in Rieti, Italy.

Komen was timed in seven minutes, 20.67 seconds, bettering Algerian Noureddine Morceli’s previous record of 7:25.11.

Kipketer was timed in 1:41.83 in the 800, barely failing to erase Sebastian Coe’s 15-year-old mark of 1:41.73, set in Florence.

Miscellany

Seven former football players were involved in NCAA violations that resulted in the Mississippi State team being put on probation, The Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger reported.

Nebraska, which opens the season Saturday against Michigan State, kept the top spot in the Associated Press’ college football poll, with 49 first-place votes and 1,642 points. Tennessee, which plays host to UCLA on Saturday, was second. USC was 19th.

Mats Sundin and Peter Forsberg scored third-period goals to give Sweden a 5-2 victory over Finland at Stockholm and a semifinal berth in the World Cup of Hockey. In the other game, Steve Yzerman scored with 3:10 left to give Canada a 3-2 victory over Slovakia at Ontario.

Florian Rousseau of France beat America’s Marty Nothstein in the men’s sprint final at the World Track Cycling Championship in Manchester, England.
