A leg injury will keep Notre Dame starting tailback Randy Kinder out of Thursday’s season opener against Vanderbilt. He pulled a muscle in his right leg during practice Sunday. Robert Farmer will start.

Chad Hutchinson, who has not thrown a college pass and skipped spring practice to play baseball, was named Stanford’s starting quarterback ahead of senior Tim Carey, who said he would transfer. . . . Clemson receiver Tony Horne, being investigated for an alleged assault, was suspended indefinitely by the team. Eight Tigers have been arrested since February.
