Main Street Bridge Repairs on Schedule

Share

A three-month construction project to repair the second lane of the Main Street bridge is running on schedule, according to a city engineer.

The bridge was shut down after big flows in the Ventura River in March 1995 damaged foundation supports on one side, causing the supports to sink about 5 feet. The other side dropped only a few inches and was still safe for use, City Engineer Rick Raivey said.

Repairs of the bridge began Aug. 1.

Crews will remove and replace two 60-foot spans. They will also resurface the bridge. Regulations require that all bridge repairs be completed within three months, or by Nov. 1, Raivey said.

Since the washout, only one lane of the bridge has been open to vehicles. A traffic signal allows vehicles streaming in opposite directions to alternate crossings.

Raivey said there was initially some apprehension on whether a one-lane bridge would be sufficient, but because the bridge does not handle a high volume of traffic, narrowing and construction have proved to be only a minor inconvenience, Raivey said.
