Emmy Awards, Kids’ Shows Top Menu

The nighttime Emmy Awards, kids’ TV, sports and a Hollywood Bowl concert highlight the weekend fare.

Paul Reiser (with assistance from Michael J. Fox and Oprah Winfrey) hosts the 48th Emmy Awards for prime-time and late-night programming, Sunday at 8 p.m. Channel 7. “ER” leads the nominations.

ABC unveils several new children’s series today on Channel 7: “Brand Spanking New Doug” (7:30 a.m.), “Mighty Ducks” (8 a.m.), “Bone Chillers” (10 a.m.) and “Gargoyles: Goliath Chronicles” (10:30 a.m.).

Also on Saturday: Over on Fox, “Big Bad Beetle Borgs” premieres at 7:30 a.m. on Channel 11. Warner Bros. airs “Waynehead” at 8:30 a.m. and its new animated “Superman” at 10 a.m. on Channel 5.

UPN’s new children’s lineup debuts Sunday with “Jumanji” at 9 a.m., “The Mouse and the Monster” at 9:30 a.m., “The Incredible Hulk” at 10 a.m. and “B.A.D.: The Bureau of Alien Detectors” at 10:30 a.m.

The 1994 hit Disney animated musical “The Lion King” makes its cable TV debut Sunday at 7 p.m. on the Disney Channel.

On the music front, the annual “Live From the Hollywood Bowl” concert airs tonight at 8:30 on Channel 13. Tony Award-winning Bernadette Peters makes her first appearance at the Bowl. The evening closes with a fireworks display featuring conductor William Eddins and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Tawny Little hosts; Alan Thicke is the special guest star.

The U.S. Open tennis tournament enters its final phase today at 8 a.m. with CBS’ coverage of the men’s singles semifinals and the women’s doubles finals. The women’s and men’s singles finals air Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. on Channel 2.

The UCLA Bruins kick off their first season under new coach Bob Toledo when they take on the Tennessee Volunteers, today at 5 p.m. on Channel 2.
