855-Acre Fire Near Saugus Contained
Firefighters surrounded a brush fire Sunday that burned 855 acres and were expected to take control tonight, U.S. Forest Service officials said.
“There’s little parts of it that are still burning actively within the perimeter,” said dispatcher Edward Hesbol on Sunday evening. The fire broke out Saturday after noon in the Angeles National Forest about 12 miles northeast of Saugus.
Firefighters from the Forest Service, L.A. County Fire Department and state Department of Forestry battled the blaze, Hesbol said. A water-dropping helicopter and two air tankers also assisted.
Just before 3 p.m. Sunday they achieved 100% containment of the fire, which was burning near San Francisquito Canyon Road, he said.
No structures were burned although on Saturday four firefighters suffered minor injuries.
Hesbol said the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
