A van went out of control and crashed on a highway Monday, killing all five occupants, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 12:10 p.m. on California 14, northwest of Inyokern, said Sgt. Gary Goldy of the California Highway Patrol. Identities of the victims, who appeared to be in their 50s and 60s, were unknown, he said.

The van was traveling north on California 14 at an unknown speed when it went out of control and struck the center divider, Goldy said. The vehicle went airborne and landed on its nose before coming to rest on its tires.

“I’m surprised it didn’t turn over,” Goldy said.

He said the front portion of the van was caved in. Extrication of the victims continued into the afternoon.

Inyokern, in northern Kern County, is about 110 miles north of Los Angeles.
