OUTLOOK

The Colonists got off on the wrong foot last year. They opened without most of their key players, who had been suspended for an off-campus prank, and fell to Fullerton, 44-0. Things just got worse from there. The Colonists dropped two more and after three games had been outscored, 103-20. When it came down to league play, Anaheim was tough on just about everyone. Still the team lost seven of its first eight games before victories over Magnolia and Valencia finished the year, giving Carter something to build on for this season.

There are, however, a lot of new faces. Only 10 lettermen are back. “If Luis Gomez, Jose Rodriguez and Jesus Acevedo work hard and stay healthy, we have a chance,” Carter said. Acevedo and Gomez were first team all-league selections last year. On offense, the league’s best running back, Rueben Droughns, who gained 1,123 yards and scored 13 touchdowns, is gone, so Carter is looking for someone to step up.

He tabs Western, Brea-Olinda and Valencia as the top three contenders.
