PARTICIPATION SPORTS

* FISHING: The Catalina Gold Cup marlin tournament. Check in Sunday at 1 p.m. at Pavilion Lodge in Avalon; fishing Monday and Tuesday. Cost is $2,000 per boat, which can fish up to five anglers, plus optional premiums for larger prizes. The event features up to a $450,000 purse and, in an attempt to encourage catch-and-release, a Ford F-150 truck and Penn stand-up rods and reels for the team that releases the most marlin.
