GAME OF THE WEEK

MICHIGAN (1-0) at COLORADO (2-0)

* KICKOFF: Saturday, 12:30 p.m., pay-per-view.

* STORY LINE: It was Sept. 24, 1994, at Ann Arbor, Mich. The play was called “Jets formation, rocket left.” With his team trailing, 26-21, Colorado quarterback Kordell Stewart heaved a desperation pass as the clock struck 0:00. The pass traveled 74 yards in the air and, somehow, landed in the arms of Michael Westbrook for a touchdown that gave the Buffaloes a 27-26 victory. Colorado Coach Rick Neuheisel, then an assistant, bet his wife he would be asked about the play 100 times this week. Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr, a Wolverine assistant at the time, refused to discuss the game.

* COLORADO UPDATE: Koy Detmer passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another last week in a sloppy 38-24 victory over Colorado State. With Detmer, running back Herchell Troutman and receiver Rae Carruth, Colorado can match any team in the country at skill positions.

* MICHIGAN UPDATE: The Wolverines are coming off a bye after an opening victory over Illinois. Scott Dreisbach, who was 4-0 as a starter last year before injuring his thumb, is back.

* EDGE TO COLORADO: Neuheisel has a few reasons to worry: Michigan is well rested and Carr will use the 1994 game to get his team motivated. The Wolverines also boast a strong defense, led by linebacker Jarrett Irons. This game can’t possibly match 1994’s for drama, but don’t be shocked if it’s decided in the final minute.

* THE LINE: Colorado by 8 1/2.

OTHER GAMES

OREGON STATE (0-1)

at USC (1-1)

* KICKOFF: Saturday, 3:30 p.m., Prime Sports.

* STORY LINE: Get-well time continues for the Trojans, who rebounded from their opening loss to Penn State by routing Illinois last week, 55-3. USC is out to prove wrong the skeptics who wrote off the Trojans after their lackluster Kickoff Classic effort. USC won’t have much problem doing it Saturday.

* OREGON STATE UPDATE: This is about as sad as it gets. The Beavers have lost 11 in a row, including last week’s home opener against Montana, a Division I-AA school. Coach Jerry Pettibone has scrapped the wishbone offense that at least made OSU interesting to watch.

* EDGE TO USC: Here’s all you need to know. USC leads the series, 49-7-4, dating to 1914, and has outscored Oregon State, 416-95, in the last 10 games.

* THE LINE: USC by 25.

NORTHEAST LOUISIANA (1-1) at UCLA (0-1)

* KICKOFF: Saturday, 7 p.m.

* STORY LINE: Nobody likes a loser, but the Bruins’ 35-20 defeat by No. 2 Tennessee at Knoxville last week was hardly discouraging for a young team breaking in a new coach.

* NE LOUISIANA UPDATE: Indians produced Stan Humphries, but that won’t help Saturday.

* EDGE TO UCLA: After Knoxville, expect the Bruins to come out flat against an inferior team before a quiet Rose Bowl crowd. In the end, talent will win out. If it doesn’t, start penning those letters to the editor.

* THE LINE: UCLA by 32.

KANSAS (1-0) at TEXAS CHRISTIAN (1-0)

* KICKOFF: Saturday, 6 p.m., ESPN.

* STORY LINE: Can Pat Sullivan’s TCU team make it two in a row against the Big 12 after last week’s 20-7 victory over Oklahoma? Or is this the week the Big 12 wins back some dignity from the WAC?

* KANSAS UPDATE: The Jayhawks, after mauling UCLA in the Aloha Bowl, picked up where they left off in their ’96 opener, pounding Ball State, 35-10.

* TCU UPDATE: The Horned Frogs appear to have one of their best defenses in years, having held Oklahoma to 12 completions in 37 passes.

* EDGE TO KANSAS: TCU’s triumph over Oklahoma was largely a matter of beating a myth. Kansas, however, is the real deal, a solid team with a solid coach in Glen Mason.

* THE LINE: Kansas by 4.

BRIGHAM YOUNG (2-0) at WASHINGTON (0-1)

* KICKOFF: Saturday, 12:30 p.m., Channel 7.

* STORY LINE: BYU carries WAC flag into Pac-10 waters in watershed game for Cougars and quarterback Steve Sarkisian.

* BYU UPDATE: After the Cougars’ 58-9 victory last week, Arkansas State Coach John Bobo called BYU’s front “the most awesome collection of offensive line ability I’ve ever seen.”

* WASHINGTON UPDATE: The Huskies rallied from a 42-21 deficit only to lose to Arizona State on a last-second field goal. Freshman quarterback Brock Huard relieved starter Shane Fortney several times in 95-degree conditions, but Fortney will start against BYU.

* EDGE TO BYU: The Cougars have at least as much offensive power as Jake Plummer and the Sun Devils, which doesn’t bode well for Washington’s defense.

* THE LINE: Washington by 4.
