Padres Stay on Pace by Beating Reds, 8-0

Not all of the Padres were watching the Dodger game on television Sunday, after San Diego defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 8-0, at San Diego.

“My eyes were right in here in the clubhouse with this ice pack on my heel,” Tony Gwynn said. “But I know there were a lot of people watching the scoreboard.”

Gwynn helped San Diego keep pace with the Dodgers in the West with a four-for-four day, and Ken Caminiti tied Dave Winfield’s single-season club record for runs batted in as the Padres routed the Reds. All four of San Diego’s run-scoring hits came with two outs, starting with Wally Joyner’s first-inning double.

Caminiti tied Winfield’s 1979 RBI-record of 118 with a bases-loaded single in the fourth off former Padre Pedro Martinez, scoring Joey Hamilton (14-8) and Rickey Henderson for a 4-0 lead.

Pittsburgh 4-11, San Francisco 1-9--Tony Womack doubled in two runs during the Pirates’ six-run 10th inning and Pittsburgh held on for an 11-9 victory over the Giants in the second game of a doubleheader at San Francisco.

The Pirates, who won the first game, took a 5-1 lead into the ninth inning of the second game before allowing the Giants to tie it. San Francisco’s Barry Bonds stole his 30th base of the year, giving him the fourth 30-steal, 30-homer season of his career.

Colorado 11, Houston 4--Andres Galarraga, leading the NL in home runs and RBIs, connected twice and the Rockies defeated the Astros at Denver for their eighth consecutive victory.

Galarraga hit a solo shot in the second inning and a three-run drive in the sixth, giving him 45 home runs and 140 RBIs.

Florida 4, Montreal 3--Jeff Conine homered for the second consecutive game and drove in two runs as the Marlins avoided a four-game sweep at Montreal with the victory.

Marlin starter Al Leiter reached the 15-victory mark for the first time.

Atlanta 3, New York 2--Tom Glavine struck out 10 in 8 2/3 innings and Chipper Jones drove in two runs, helping the Braves stop a six-game losing streak with the victory at New York.

Philadelphia 6, Chicago 1--Catcher Benito Santiago hit three home runs and drove in six runs to lead the Phillies over the Cubs at Chicago.
