THE CLASS OF ’95

Badminton: Judy Pak, Garden Grove. Finished second in the girls’ individual and mixed double finals (with partner Sang Kim) in the Southern Section Division I. A second-team all-county choice, she is attending Long Beach State and hopes to try out for the U.S. national team.

Softball: Marcy Crouch, Marina. She entered the year hailed as a winner, having already won two section titles in girls’ soccer and one in softball. She lived up to her reputation (her soccer team won again), pitching a four-hitter (three to the same batter) in the section title game to beat Mater Dei, 3-0. She was the section and Times Orange County player of the year. She went to Stanford on scholarship.

Girls’ Volleyball: Misty May, Newport Harbor. She switched from outside hitter, which she played in high school, to setter for Long Beach State. She became the first 49er freshman to earn first-team All-Big West Conference honors and the first to be selected the conference’s freshman of the year.

THE CLASS OF ’96

Baseball: Bobby Brito, Cypress: A three-time all-county selection, Brito ended his career as the all-time leader in doubles (41) and second all time in homers (26). A fifth-round draft pick, Brito signed with the Boston Red Sox.

Girls’ Basketball: Marie Philman, Edison. Philman averaged 21.7 points--the second-best total in the county--and shot 49% while taking 505 shots in 29 games. She led Edison (22-8) into the top 10 (fifth) and the Division I-A semifinals. A three-time all-county pick, she was The Times player of the year. She received a scholarship to UCLA.

Boys’ Soccer: Joey Vazquez, Fountain Valley. After being named The Times boys’ soccer player of the year as a junior, Vazquez did not live up to expectations his senior season. In fact, he actually had a better senior football season than soccer season. He is playing as a freshman on Fullerton’s 17th-ranked soccer team.
