No. 1 Foothill Sinks El Toro in Water Polo

Foothill, top-ranked in Division I, opened up a close game with a high-scoring third quarter and defeated fifth-ranked El Toro, 10-7, in a nonleague water polo game Tuesday at El Toro.

The team were tied, 4-4, at halftime, but Foothill (1-0) outscored the Chargers, 6-0, in the third quarter. Jeff Plueger had three goals to lead the Knights and Matt McPherson scored twice, both coming in the third quarter.

The Chargers (0-1) were led by Matt Sakatani, who scored twice.

In other nonleague water polo:

El Dorado 13, Esperanza 11--Max Aguilar scored seven goals and Kendall Benson had four for El Dorado (1-0), which upset 10th-ranked Esperanza. The Golden Hawks led, 10-4, after three quarters.

Long Beach Wilson 7, Newport Harbor 3--Newport Harbor, ranked eighth in Division I, only trailed second-ranked Wilson, 1-0, at halftime and, 3-1, after three quarters before the Bruins scored four fourth-quarter goals.

San Clemente 17, Brea Olinda 9--D.J. Yielding scored six goals for third-ranked San Clemente. The Tritons (1-0) led by one at halftime, but outscored the Wildcats, 11-4, in the second half. Jason Hart had 17 saves for Brea Olinda (0-1), ranked fifth in Division VI.

Troy 17, El Modena 16--Jim Kennedy, with seven goals, scored the winning goal in the last two minutes of the game. Chris Ramsey, who held off a strong El Modena offense the last minute of the game, had six saves for Troy. Bjorn Barre had six goals to lead El Modena.

In nonleague boys’ cross-country:

Riverside Sherman Indian 23, St. Margaret’s 40, Downey Calvary Chapel 91, Huntington Beach Claremont 132--Ryan Downey, who placed 13th in the Division IV state finals last season, finished first with a course-record time of 16:42 for St. Margaret’s (3-1) at Salt Creek Beach Park.

In nonleague girls’ cross-country:

St. Margaret’s 38, Riverside Sherman Indian 40, Downey Calvary Chapel 47, Connelly 103--Freshman Kipp Downey finished first with a course-record time of 22:23 and freshman Erin Bradley was second (23:30) for St. Margaret’s (3-0).

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Buena Park 10, Century 8--Sheila Cabrillos won the decisive singles set and Mindy Nguyen and Monique Dao swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, for host Buena Park (1-1).

Capistrano Valley 10, Irvine 8--Jenny Bailey and Leigh Ann Merryman won two of three singles sets for Capistrano Valley (3-0). Sarah Denson swept in singles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2, for Irvine.

Corona del Mar 10, Dana Hills 8--The Sea Kings, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, needed a doubles victory in the final set from Ashley Harrington and Marisol Perea to clinch the victory. Corona del Mar’s Nina Vaughan and her sister, Nadia, both needed to rally from deficits to defeat Dana Hills’ top singles player, Summer Tantee, 7-6 and 7-5.

El Dorado 12, Canyon 6--Brittany McMillan and Anne McMillan swept, 6-1, 6-3, 6-0, in doubles for eighth-ranked El Dorado.

Newport Harbor 17, Los Alamitos 1--Vanessa Godbey of No. 4 Newport Harbor, started the Sailors’ romp over fifth-ranked Los Alamitos with a 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 sweep in No. 1 singles.

Villa Park 13, Esperanza 5--Faye DeVera swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for No. 2 Villa Park in its season opener.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Capistrano Valley 3, Irvine 0--Kristen Smith had 10 kills for eighth-ranked Capistrano Valley (1-1), which swept No.7 Irvine, 15-10, 15-11, 15-13.

Dana Hills 3, El Toro 0--No. 1 Dana Hills had little trouble with El Toro, winning, 15-2, 15-2, 15-10. Jami Bari had 11 kills and 22 assists to lead the Chargers (1-0).

Esperanza 3, Long Beach Wilson 1--Jessica Suddeth had 14 kills and Amy Nihipali and Trina Kightlinger each had 11 for fifth-ranked Esperanza (1-0), which won, 15-7, 13-15, 15-8, 15-3.

Laguna Beach 3, Newport Harbor 1--Melissa Snow led No. 4 Newport Beach with 13 kills in a losing effort against No. 3 Laguna Beach, which won, 15-12, 15-5, 8-15, 15-13.

Mission Viejo 3, Costa Mesa 0--Elis Weselis had 10 kills for the visiting Diablos (2-0), who won, 15-4, 15-1, 15-9.
