Saddleback’s Malki, OCC’s Siegel Earn Scholar Honors

Saddleback’s Charles Malki and Heather Ann Siegel of Orange Coast have been selected the men’s and women’s winners of the California community college 1996 Wilson Scholar Athlete Awards.

Malki, a swimmer, qualified for the state meet in 13 events, earning All-American honors in 11. He is currently taking premedical courses at UC Irvine.

Siegel played soccer and was also on the track team; competing in the hurdles, the sprints and threw the javelin. Both will be honored Nov. 22 in Los Angeles.

Southland poll: Long Beach (2-0) remains the top-ranked football team in Southern California. Bakersfield (2-0) is second, Saddleback (2-0) third, El Camino (2-0) fourth, San Bernardino Valley (1-0) fifth, Cerritos (2-0) sixth, Santa Barbara (2-0) seventh, Hancock (2-0) eighth, Mt. Turnaround: The Cypress men’s water polo team is off to a 7-1 start this season after finishing 3-25 last season. The Chargers are 2-0 in the Orange Empire Conference heading into today’s 2:30 p.m. game with visiting Saddleback.

They said it: “It was a consistently backward march capped by disaster,” Saddleback Coach Bill Cunerty after his team was penalized three times before having a punt blocked and returned for touchdown in a 28-23 victory over Mt. San Antonio Saturday.
