From a Times Staff Writer

Twelve more drivers have become victims of a mysterious spate of roadway sniper attacks in which unknown objects have been hurled at moving cars, smashing the vehicles’ rear windows, authorities said Thursday.

The attacks, all recorded Wednesday night, mean that at least 73 motorists have had car windows blown out recently by unidentified projectiles.

However, an incident Thursday involving a Los Angeles Police Department patrol car in Pacoima was not believed to be linked to the series of attacks, authorities said. The black-and-white police car was driving on surface streets near Osborne Street and Telfair Avenue when its rear window was shattered. The intersection is not near a freeway or freeway ramp.

Unlike the other incidents, said LAPD Sgt. Stephany Payne, a possible projectile--a piece of pipe--was recovered at the scene. Payne said it is unclear if the pipe was thrown or was accidentally vaulted into the air by another car. The officer did not report seeing anyone nearby when his car was hit, Payne said.
