Expos’ Martinez Suspended by NL

Montreal pitcher Pedro Martinez was suspended for eight games and Philadelphia pitcher Mike Williams was suspended for six games for their roles in a bench-clearing brawl this week.

The players’ association did not immediately say if it would appeal the penalties, which also included fines.

Mike Greenwell said he won’t return next season as the role player that the Boston Red Sox want him to be.

“My time here is done and it’s time for me to move on and I’m not coming back here,” he said.

The Red Sox are expected to try Wil Cordero in left field next season.

The Atlanta Braves’ new stadium will be named for longtime owner Ted Turner.

The announcement ended speculation that the stadium would be named for home run king Hank Aaron.

Brave President Stan Kasten said the organization will seek permission to name a nearby street for Aaron and put his name on the park’s street address.

The American and National leagues set their umpiring crews for the division playoffs and championship series.

In the AL, Jim Evans, Ken Kaiser, Durwood Merrill, Larry Young, Al Clark and Mark Johnson will work the division playoff that opens at New York on Tuesday night. The other series, which starts at the wild-card city, will have Drew Coble, Greg Kosc, Tim Tschida, Tim Welke, John Shulock and Ted Hendry.

In the NL, Harry Wendelstedt, Frank Pulli, Jim Quick, Gerry Davis, Dana DeMuth and Greg Bonin will work the series that begins at St. Louis on Tuesday. Bruce Froemming, Terry Tata, Eric Gregg, Steve Rippley, Tom Hallion and Bill Hohn are assigned to the series that starts in the wild-card city.

For the league championship series, Larry Barnett, Dale Scott, Mike Reilly, Dan Morrison, Rocky Roe and Rich Garcia will work in the AL and Paul Runge, Ed Montague, Jerry Crawford, Joe West, Bob Davidson and Mark Hirschbeck in the NL.
