Vargas’ Debut Tentatively Set

U.S. Olympic boxer Fernando Vargas of Oxnard, who last month signed a multiyear promotional contract with Main Event Productions, likely will make his professional debut in late November at a Los Angeles venue to be determined.
“He’ll be the focal point; it’ll be his show,” said Mike Boorman, Main Events spokesman. “We don’t have an opponent in mind, but it’ll be easy enough finding someone to fight him. We’re more concerned with finding the right date.”
The most likely date is Nov. 29 and the bout probably will be telecast on ESPN, Boorman said. Although Vargas is interested in debuting in his hometown--possibly at Oxnard High, his alma mater--holding the event in Ventura County is unlikely because of no suitable arena, Boorman said.
Vargas, 19, also is tentatively scheduled to fight on the undercard of the Riddick Bowe-Andrew Golata rematch in Atlantic City on Dec. 14.
Vargas, a welterweight, lost a controversial decision to Marian Simion of Romania in the second round of the Olympic Games in Atlanta.
