Aykroyd’s New ‘PSI’ Challenges ‘SNL’

Dan Aykroyd is going up against his old stamping grounds, NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

Aykroyd hosts the new syndicated series “PSI Factor,” premiering tonight at 11:35 on Channel 2. The dramatic anthology series focuses on investigators examining paranormal experiences.

“SNL,” meanwhile, opens its 22nd season tonight at 11:30 on Channel 4, with frequent host Tom Hanks and musical guests Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

Other new syndicated series premiering today are the action-fantasy “The Adventures of Sinbad,” 6 p.m. on Channel 5, and the reality show “Beach Patrol,” 4 p.m. on Channel 2.

Tim Allen, Shaquille O’Neal, LL Cool J and Coolio are among the celebrities scheduled to participate in “Nickelodeon’s Third Annual Big Help-a-thon,” beginning Sunday at 9 a.m. on the cable channel. The eight-hour event at Pacific Park at Santa Monica Pier encourages children to volunteer to help out in their communities.

On the sports front, the red-hot pennant race goes into its final weekend with the Padres taking on the Dodgers today at 1 p.m. on Channel 11 and Sunday at 1 p.m. on Channel 5.
