Wyoming Extends Victory Streak to Nine, 45-22

Len Sexton rushed for 184 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead No. 25 Wyoming over San Jose State, 45-22, Saturday at San Jose.

The Cowboys, with nine consecutive victories, have the nation’s second-longest winning streak. Miami has won 11 in a row.

Sexton, who rushed 17 times, gained 135 yards on two runs. He scored on runs of 68 and five yards and also caught a 12-yard screen pass for a touchdown.

Wyoming’s Marcus Harris caught six passes for 148 yards and quarterback Josh Wallwork was 15 of 33 for 273 yards and three touchdowns. He had three passes intercepted.

The game was surprisingly competitive before a key juncture late in the first half.

Trailing 21-14, San Jose State gained nothing on a fourth-and-inches play at the Wyoming three. On the next play, Sexton ran 68 yards to the Spartan 29 to set up Cory Wedel’s 39-yard field goal with 1:33 left.

The Cowboys took a 38-14 lead in the third quarter on a 67-yard scoring run by Sexton and a four-yard pass from Wallwork to Richard Peace.

San Jose State reserve quarterback Dan O’Dell threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Carlos Meeks with 4:39 remaining in the game.

Wyoming scored with 2:55 left when Jeremy Silcox and Greg Kuhn combined on a 25-yard pass-and-run play.

San Jose State had sacked Wallwork on Wyoming’s first two plays of the game, and nose guard Jason Evans partially blocked the punt.

That put the Spartans at the Cowboy 25 and they scored on Patrick Walsh’s five-yard run with 11:41 left in the first quarter.

Wyoming tied the score on its next possession when Sexton ran five yards with 8:18 left in the quarter.

San Jose State’s James Reed returned the kickoff 48 yards to the Spartan 49, and San Jose State took the lead again when Carl Dean threw 16 yards to Damon Bowers with 4:24 left in the first quarter.

The Cowboys’ Brian Brown recovered Walsh’s fumble at the Spartans 12 and Wallwork threw to Harris for the tying touchdown on the next play with 1:33 left in the quarter.

Wyoming’s Jay Jenkins intercepted Dean’s pass at the Cowboys 43 and Wallwork and Sexton combined on a 12-yard screen pass for the score and a 21-14 lead with 14:18 left in the half.
