Although he was 21-8 in the regular season and 5-0 in his last six starts against the Baltimore Orioles, Andy Pettitte said he was surprised to get the Yankees’ starting assignment over David Cone in tonight’s opener.

“Maybe me being a left-hander made the decision easier,” Pettitte said, alluding to the Orioles’ 24-25 record against left-handed starters.

Cone said he concurred with the choice.

Baltimore second baseman Roberto Alomar issued another apology for the spitting incident with umpire John Hirschbeck.

“Whoever knows Roberto Alomar and my family would consider myself a great person,” he said. “Good people make mistakes. It’s time to move on and concentrate on baseball.”

That may be difficult to do in the Bronx Zoo.

“I would call on the fans to voice anything they want but to leave it at that,” Torre said.
