Pet Fair to Focus on Reptiles, Amphibians

Share

North Hollywood Recreation Center will host a pet fair this weekend, but leave the dogs and cats at home. This fair is for lizards, snakes, turtles, frogs, salamanders and other “herps.”

The Southwestern Herpetologists Society’s 15th annual reptile and amphibian exhibit will feature creatures large and small. Unlike commercial shows, this event seeks to educate people about the handling and preservation of reptiles and amphibians.

“We have no ax to grind or animals to sell,” said John Holmes, treasurer of the society. “The heart of the show is teaching people about animals. They learn which ones are for beginners and which ones are more difficult to take care of.”

One table at the show will be reserved for baby “herps” that have been bred by members of the club. A fossil exhibit also is planned, and souvenirs and refreshments will be sold.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children from 6 to 13 years old. Children 5 and under are free. Members of the society get in free.

The show will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The recreation center is at 11430 Chandler Blvd.
