Buffalo Bill quarterback Jim Kelly, sidelined because of a hamstring injury since Sept. 19, is expected to start Sunday against Miami at Rich Stadium.

Buffalo Coach Marv Levy, as is his custom, refused to say whether Kelly will replace second-year backup Todd Collins.

The New England Patriots signed cornerback Otis Smith, cut by the New York Jets on Sept. 24, and waived rookie tight end Lovett Purnell. Smith started 10 of the 11 games he played last season and had six interceptions. But he pulled a hamstring in training camp and the emergence of third-round draft choice Ray Mickens cost him playing time.
