Big Plays Key Victory for Sailors

Bret Baker blocked an extra point and a punt as the Newport Harbor special teams played a key roll in defeating Savanna, 39-15, Friday night in nonleague play at Western High.

Ray Ohrel scored on a 72-yard punt return with 9:18 left in the first half to give the Sailors a 7-0 lead.

“We were efficient when we did have the ball,” said Sailor Coach Jeff Brinkley, noting Newport Harbor ran only 18 offensive plays in the first half while building a 20-3 lead. “The special teams did an outstanding job.”

Two Savanna punts were also hurried for 11 and 12 yards.

Jason Deere set up the second Newport Harbor touchdown when he recovered a fumble on the Savanna 28. Ohrel scored from the five.

Josiah Fredriksen connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Danny Pulido to increase the Newport Harbor lead to 20-0.

A 44-yard field goal by Jason Brown put Savanna (3-2) on the scoreboard with 1:41 left in the first half.

Newport Harbor (5-0) increased its lead to 26-3 when Pulido took a fumble by Ohrel and ran the final seven yards on a 15-yard scoring play. Jesse Magana blocked the conversion try.

Fredriksen connected on his 10th touchdown pass of the season, hitting Brad La Bass with a 35-yard completion.

Brown scored a 15-yard touchdown for Savanna in the third quarter and Ohrel added a seven-yard run for the Sailors early in the fourth quarter.

Charles Ford scored the final touchdown of the game on a 69-yard play, going the final 42 yards after recovering a fumble. Jeff Kinglesmith caught a 27-yard pass from Ryan Poland before fumbling.

Ohrel had 23 carries for 139 yards to lead the Sailors. Fredriksen completed eight and 12 passes for 131 yards with Pulido catching six for 73 yards.
