Corona del Mar Names Dow Coach

Zellie Dow has been named girls’ basketball coach at Corona del Mar, athletic director Jerry Jelnick announced Friday.

He replaces Garth Flint, who is taking a one-year sabbatical. Upon his return, Flint will be an assistant for the final two years of Dow’s agreement with the school.

Dow, a member of the Orange County Officials’ Assn., was a Rancho Santiago assistant with the women’s program the last seasons.

Justina Gibble has been named girls’ soccer coach at Newport Harbor.

Gibble replaces Dean Laird, who led the Sailors to a 6-8-7 overall record, 4-4-2 in Sea View League, before leaving after the season.

Gibble played for Monmouth University from 1986-89, an NCAA Division I program in New Jersey and served as a graduate assistant after finishing her eligibility. Since 1992, she has played with AJAX, a local club team.

Splash forward Dale Ervine, who was second in the Continental Indoor Soccer League’s goal-scoring race by two goals, was named to the league’s All-CISL second team.

Ervine, who scored 45 goals and finished with 69 points--the fourth-best total in the league--was beaten out by the CISL’s top two point-scorers, Tatu (89) and David Doyle (72) from Dallas.

Midfielder Paul Dougherty (Houston), defenders Danny Pena (Sacramento) and Genoni Martinez (Monterrey) and goalkeeper Brett Phillips (Washington) were also named to the first team.

Splash defender Doug Neely (43 blocks) and midfielder Danny Barber (30 assists) were among the six honorable mention players.

Denise Kenyon, a former standout at El Toro High, moved into fourth place on the University of San Francisco’s all-time soccer scoring list Friday, scoring the Dons’ only goal in a 2-1 nonconference loss at Washington.

A senior midfielder, Kenyon has 55 points in her career. She was the South Coast League MVP as a senior at El Toro.
