Eyes of Texas Upon Oklahoma Victory
Reserve tailback James Allen scored on a two-yard run in overtime Saturday as Oklahoma rallied from an 11-point deficit to defeat No. 25 Texas, 30-27, in one of the rivalry’s biggest upsets at Dallas.
The victory ended the Sooners’ seven-game losing streak, longest in school history.
Oklahoma, 1-4 and 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference, was a 22-point underdog to Texas (3-3, 2-1).
Allen, a senior who lost his starting job to freshman De’Mond Parker, ran for 11 and eight yards to set up his winning touchdown. Phil Dawson had kicked a 43-yard field goal to put the Longhorns ahead, 27-24, in overtime, after Oklahoma won the toss and decided to play defense first.
No. 9 Colorado 35, Oklahoma St. 13--Koy Detmer passed for 402 yards and three first-half touchdowns and safety Steve Rosga returned an interception 105 yards as the Buffaloes (4-1, 2-0) overcame the absence of several suspended players to beat the Cowboys (3-3, 0-3) at Boulder.
Detmer threw for 271 yards in the first half as Colorado took a 21-10 lead at intermission.
Besides his scoring return, Rosga recorded 18 tackles.
Of the 12 Colorado players suspended either one or two games for misusing long-distance telephone access codes, nine sat out the game. The remaining suspensions must be served next week.
No. 22 Kansas St. 35, Missouri 10--Mike Lawrence rushed for two touchdowns and Mario Smith scored on a 100-yard interception return for the Wildcats (5-1, 2-1) at Columbia, Mo.
Lawrence gained 168 yards in 25 carries, including scoring runs of seven and 27 yards.
Missouri fell to 2-4, 0-3.
Texas Tech 30, Kansas 17--Byron Hanspard outrushed June Henley, and Zebbie Lethridge scored two touchdowns in a 1:44 span of the fourth quarter as the Red Raiders (4-2, 3-1) took advantage of two Jayhawk turnovers at Lawrence, Kan.
Hanspard, who came into the game as the nation’s No. 2 leading rusher, had 190 yards. Kansas’ Henley, who came in at No. 3 nationally, had only 43 yards.
Kansas dropped to 3-2, 1-1.
Texas A&M; 24, Iowa St. 21--Albert Connell turned a short pass into a 70-yard touchdown play, and freshman Dante’ Hall returned a punt 69 yards for another score for the Aggies (3-3, 1-1) at Ames, Iowa.
Texas A&M; also got a 74-yard run from D’Andre Hardeman to set up a touchdown in winning on its first visit ever to Iowa State.
The three big plays helped the Aggies hold on against the Cyclones (2-3, 1-1) and national rushing leader Troy Davis, who had a season-low 130 yards.
