A 12-year-old south Oxnard girl suffered a gunshot wound in the thigh Tuesday afternoon, apparently while playing with a small caliber handgun with two 12-year-old boys at a house on Yucca Street, police said.

The unidentified girl was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center where she was still being treated Tuesday night, police said.

Police questioned the two boys--one a resident of the single-story residence in the 800 block of East Yucca Street where the 4 p.m. incident occurred--but made no arrests. None of the children were identified because of their age.

“The kids aren’t being real forthright about how they got the gun, who the gun belongs to and why they had it,” Cmdr. John Chrombach said. “Preliminarily we’ve found the gun does not belong [to the owners of] that residence.”

It is a felony for firearm owners to allow a weapon to be accessible to children who then cause great bodily injury to themselves or others, he said.
