Calendars ready?

OK, the date of the Doo Dah Parade in Pasadena is Nov. 24. It may be a daffy event but it’s not held on a Thursday (as we mistakenly stated the other day).

Grand marshal Dr. Demento, the radio personality, was so shaken by our erroneous posting that he e-mailed us: “Could it be that I will be beating my demented drum by myself on the 24th?”

We wanted to publish this correction quickly--before we started receiving faxes from those oh-so-efficient Doo Dah regulars, the members of the Synchronized Briefcase Drill Team.

SMOOTH OPERATOR: “I’ll Always Have Paris!” is the title of syndicated columnist Art Buchwald’s memoir of his postwar years with the International Herald Tribune, where he labored after leaving USC.

One of his funnier stories concerns “the Paris-based manager for an American movie company (who) was contacted by his studio in Hollywood and told that a very important TV station owner was coming to Paris alone.”

Upon arriving, the Hollywood executive made only one request: “a female companion for dinner.” The manager found a call girl but warned her not to ask her date for money. The manager would pay her himself (the all-night rate).

Five straight mornings, the call girl showed up to be paid by the manager. Finally, worried about his budget, he called the Hollywood VIP and asked how things were going.

“Just great,” the happy executive said. “I think I’m going to get lucky tonight.”

PEKING DUNK? Bob Lentz of Sylmar found a doughnut shop that offers a bit of Chinese as a side course (see photo).

ALL CREEDENCE, ALL THE TIME: Several Angelenos report that while heading north they heard a mysterious radio station outside Fresno that plays nothing but “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

No commercials, no traffic reports, no deejays. Just “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” over and over on KZZC (FM-104.9). OK, we know the stretch of I-5 on the way to Bakersfield is called the Grapevine but . . .

Ear-witnesses said via the Internet that the Clearwater takeover dates back at least to Christmas, with one brief respite around Easter when KZZC had a mini-marathon devoted entirely to the Eagles’ “New Kid in Town.”

FCC records identify the station’s licensee as Lemoore Wireless Inc. of Tipton (near Fresno). State records say the president of Lemoore Wireless Inc. is Brian Fernee of Beverly Hills. We found no phone listings for either.

The situation puzzles Hank Rosenfeld of Santa Monica, who recently caught KZZC’s act. He asked: “Why don’t they at least play the better versions by Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight and the Pips?”

Annette Castro of Pasadena noticed that Glendale’s Brand Library and Art Center has a matrimonial ban (see photos). Why? It isn’t used for wedding receptions. But, librarian Jill Conner said, local photographers bring wedding parties to the front of the 92-year-old, castle-like landmark to use it as a backdrop--and block the entrance in the process. Do we take this ban to be fair? We do.
