Pacers’ Smits Won’t Start the Season
Indiana Pacer center Rik Smits hasn’t recovered from Sept. 8 foot surgery and isn’t expected to be available to start the season.
“I have no idea,” Pacer Coach Larry Brown said on when Smits, who hasn’t practiced this fall, will play. “I was confident that he would be ready for the first game when we went to training camp.”
To make matters worse, rookie forward-center Erick Dampier, expected to get more playing time in Smits’ absence, will undergo hernia surgery today and will be out for several weeks.
