Capistrano Beach Surfer Posts Top Score in Hawaii
Colin McPhillips of Capistrano Beach posted the top overall score in the longboard quarterfinals of the Bud Surf Championships Friday at Turtle Bay, Hawaii.
McPhillips, ranked second behind La Jolla’s Joel Tudor on the Bud Surf tour, scored a 20.66 in his heat. His 8.83 was the second best individual score of the day. McPhillips will join Hawaiians Buzzy Kerbox, Bonga Perkins, Joey Valentin, Dino Miranda and defending champion Lance Hookano in the semifinals, which begin next week at Makaha.
In the bodyboarding competition, Joe Grodzen of Lake Forest advanced to the main event.
The second round of men’s surfing begins today as well as the third round of bodyboarding.
