A 43-year-old father of eight was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver early Saturday as he walked back to his car from a call box on the Santa Ana Freeway, CHP officials said.

Jose Calderon of Rosemead had apparently run out of gas while driving south near Magnolia Street about 5:20 a.m. and had eased his Chevrolet station wagon onto the right freeway shoulder, officials said.

Calderon phoned a friend from a nearby call box and was walking back to his car when a drunk driver in a 1995 Honda Acura Integra struck him and crushed him against the back of the station wagon, officials said.
