May Helps Long Beach Stay Undefeated in Volleyball

Newport Harbor graduate Misty May had 30 assists and 10 digs as Long Beach State continued to dominate the Big West Conference in women’s volleyball with a 15-3, 15-3, 15-1 victory Saturday over Utah State at Long Beach.

The 49ers, ranked fourth in the country, improved to 23-0 overall and 10-0 in conference matches. Nique Crump led Long Beach with 12 kills and teammate Jessica Alvarado had 10 digs.

Setter Mindi Jackson had 15 assists for Utah State (1-9, 5-21).

In other Big West conference matches:

Cal State Fullerton 3, North Texas 0--Shelly Smith had 15 kills as Fullerton defeated North Texas, 15-11, 15-4, 15-11. Teammate Stephanie Wichmann had 11 kills and 12 digs for the Titans and Heather Bassett had 12 digs.

Setter Melissa Blackler had 43 assists for the Titans (14-9, 4-6).

Rachel Troell had eight kills and 13 digs for North Texas, which dropped to 6-17 and 1-9.

UC Irvine 3, New Mexico State 2--Jamie Hill had 18 kills and eight blocks as UC Irvine fought off a New Mexico State comeback, 15-8, 15-11, 13-15, 13-15, 15-12, for the conference victory. Teammate Cynthia Trotter had 16 kills and 19 digs for the Anteaters (5-18, 2-8).

Crystal Moore had 22 kills for the Aggies (6-20, 2-8).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Biola 2, Concordia 0--Sean Wohland and Ben Orr each scored goals in the victory for Biola (8-9-1, 4-3-1). Goalie Bryan Price had three saves in the shutout. Tom Pfotenhauer had 15 saves in goal for Concordia (3-12-2, 0-8).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Concordia 3, Southern California College 0--Junior setter Kim Martin set a new Concordia all-time assist record with her 1,811th assist as the Eagles won, 15-1, 15-13, 15-13.

Terilyn Walker had 20 kills and 19 digs to lead Concordia (9-17, 3-9) and teammate Geodi Sunabe added 16 kills and 18 digs. Christine Heims led Southern California College (13-14, 3-9) with 17 kills and 14 digs.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo:

USC 6, UC Irvine 4--Simun Cimerman scored three goals as top-ranked USC (13-1, 4-0) won its 10th consecutive game. Ryan Bailey scored two goals for fifth-ranked UC Irvine (9-6, 5-1).
