SIMI VALLEY — Residents of an apartment escaped injury Sunday night following a two-alarm fire that began in their living-room couch, authorities said.
The fire broke out in a second-floor unit at Sycamore Villa condominiums, 3378 Darby St., about 8:30 p.m.
Smoke filled the apartment, forcing the occupants to evacuate, but the blaze was contained in the couch, said Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman Annie Ironside.
Besides smoke damage throughout the apartment, no other damage was reported, Ironside said.
A pet cat that had crawled under a piece of furniture was saved by firefighters, she said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
