Strong Winds Will Die Down Tuesday

Until Tuesday, when winds are expected to taper off, the San Fernando Valley will experience some fairly strong gusts, forecasters said.

“It’s enough to blow hairpieces around,” said Bill Hoffer, a spokesman for the National Weather Service in Oxnard. The winds, expected to top off at about 25 mph except for occasional gusts, are not the Santa Anas typical for this time of year, Hoffer said.

Today’s winds are merely a side effect of a low-pressure system hovering over Baja California, he said. He did not expect hot, dry Santa Ana conditions for at least a week, but there are no guarantees.

“It can happen any time,” Hoffer said. “This is the season for them. When the rest of the nation has winter, we have summer, mostly because of the Santa Anas.”

Starting Tuesday, the Valley should return to a more stable weather pattern with warmer days, cool evenings, late-night and early-morning low clouds and fog, Hoffer said.

High temperatures across the Valley today are expected to reach the mid-70s.
