SANTE FE SPRINGS ST. PAUL (5-2) at No. 8 BELLFLOWER ST. JOHN BOSCO (6-0-1).

* When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

* Coaches: Marijon Ancich, St. Paul, fourth year; Jerry Person, St. John Bosco, fifth year.

* The matchup: Ancich and Person are trying the near impossible: breaking the Del Rey League stronghold of Loyola and Bishop Amat. Ancich, in his second stint at St. Paul, has found the rebuilding process difficult. The Swordsmen missed the playoffs the last two years and were 0-5 in the league last season. St. John Bosco slowly has made inroads, having made the playoffs the last two years. The undefeated Braves figure to challenge for the title with an experienced group led by two-way starter d’Andre O’Neal, who has rushed for 500 yards and has five interceptions. Linebacker Joel Quary has a team-high 84 tackles. St. Paul, which rebounded from losses to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and Loyola with a victory over Alemany last week, needs a win to keep its playoff hopes alive. It will need a strong performance from junior quarterback Chris Willis, who has passed for 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns.
