El Dorado Wakes Up, Gets Past Century, 14-6
After a slow start, El Dorado came back and scored two second-half touchdowns to beat Century, 14-6, Saturday night at Santa Ana Stadium. It was El Dorado’s third consecutive victory and the Golden Hawks take sole possession of first place in the Empire League.
“We got to go out and play our best,” Golden Hawks Coach Rick Jones said. “We can’t play average, we can’t play medium. “It took a total team effort.”
The Centurions struck first when a Johnny Mendez interception set the first scoring drive of the game. Then on the second play from scrimmage, they scored on a throwback when quarterback Javier Marin pitched the ball to Cesar Perez who threw it back downfield to an open Marin for a 54-yard touchdown pass. The extra-point attempt was no good.
The Golden Hawks’ offense was shut down in the first half as a defensive stand by the Centurions prevented Steve Warfield from converting on fourth down inside the Centurions’ 15-yard line.
“Turnovers killed us in the second half,” Centurion Coach Bill Brown said. “We took ourselves out with turnovers.”
