Rams Stun Air Force With Rally

Colorado State overcame a 41-14 third-quarter deficit by scoring 28 consecutive points to upset Air Force, 42-41, in a wild Western Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Air Force Academy, Colo.

For Colorado State, 6-4 overall and 5-1 in the WAC, quarterback Moses Moreno completed 31 of 48 passes for 358 yards and three touchdowns, the third coming to a diving Jeremy Calhoun on a 21-yard play with 45 seconds to play. Matt McDougal had to kick the extra point after the Rams were penalized 15 yards for excessive celebrating.

Air Force (6-2, 4-2) got another outstanding performance from quarterback Beau Morgan, who ran for 243 yards and four touchdowns in 21 carries.

Rice 51, No. 20 Utah 10--Michael Perry had two touchdowns, one on a 67-yard punt return, and Spencer George ran 76 yards for another as the Owls (5-3, 4-1) overwhelmed the Utes (7-2, 5-1) at Houston.

Rice rushed for 496 yards, marking fourth straight game the Owls have rushed for more than 400 yards.

Fresno State 41, Boise State 7--Michael Pittman rushed for 212 yards and a touchdown at Fresno as the Bulldogs (4-4) beat the Broncos (1-8) to provide Coach Jim Sweeney with his 200th victory. Sweeney last week announced his retirement after 19 seasons at Fresno State and 32 overall in coaching.

San Diego State 49, San Jose State 20--Bill Blanton threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns, two each to Will Blackwell and Nate Jacquet, as the Aztecs (5-2, 3-1) beat the Spartans (1-8, 1-5) at San Jose. San Diego’s leading receiver, Az Hakim, was lost for the season with a broken left leg.

No. 13 Brigham Young 40, Texas El Paso 18--After BYU led only 12-3 after the first half, James Dye returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards to spark a 21-point third quarter as the Cougars (9-1, 5-0) beat the Miners (2-6, 0-5) at Provo, Utah.

No. 17 Wyoming 59, Southern Methodist 17--The Cowboys (9-0, 6-0) intercepted five SMU passes in a WAC game at Laramie, Wyo., en route to their 12th consecutive victory.

SMU (3-6, 2-4) was able to limit Wyoming’s air game early, holding the Cowboys to 166 yards in the first half, but Wyoming turned to its running backs, especially Len Sexton, who rushed for a career-high 152 yards.

Texas Christian 42, Nevada Las Vegas 34--Backup running back John Williams’ 69-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter gave TCU some breathing room as the Horned Frogs (3-5, 2-3) beat the Rebels (0-10, 0-6) in a WAC game at Fort Worth, Texas.

New Mexico 34, Tulsa 23--Reginal Johnson rushed for 232 yards and all five New Mexico touchdowns in 41 carries as the Lobos (5-4, 2-4) rallied to erase a 23-12 deficit and beat the Golden Hurricane (3-5, 1-4) at Tulsa, Okla.
