Cypress Clinches Playoff Berth With Victory

Cypress quarterback James Law scored on a two-yard run with 29 seconds remaining in the game to beat Century, 29-22, in Empire League play Friday night at Western High.

The victory clinched a playoff berth for Cypress, its first since 1980.

Law’s run culminated an 80-yard drive in the last 3 minutes 12 seconds of the game.

The big play was when Law passed 37 yards to Jack Nealeigh to the Century six-yard line on third and four.

Century (1-8, 0-4) looked as though it had won the game when Jaime Chavez broke through and blocked Erin Doss’ punt.

Chavez picked up the ball at the Cypress’ 19 and ran it in for the score with 3:15 left in the game.

Ramiro Carasa ran for the two-point conversion to give Century a 22-21 lead.

Cypress (4-5, 3-1) took a 27-21 lead after Law threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Mike Meza with 11 seconds remaining in the first half.

Meza had nine catches for 88 yards, while Law completed 12 of 21 for 177 yards and had two rushing touchdowns.

It was Century that got off to a quick start by taking the opening kickoff and driving 80 yards on 16 plays. Javier Marin scored from 10 yards out.
