After most high school football games, the coaches from both teams talk in the middle of the field for a minute or two.

But after a quick exchange at midfield, Fountain Valley Coach George Berg went all the way to Huntington Beach’s sideline after his Barons won, 37-0, in a Sunset League game Friday.

Berg’s made his trip to visit Huntington Beach senior running back Jason Locklin, who was easy to find. He was the one in bright orange shorts and on crutches as a result of a knee injured after a four-yard run up the middle late in the first half.

Huntington Beach Coach Mike Dodd said he was told by the team doctor that the injury appears to be season-ending and will require surgery. Locklin had 31 yards against Fountain Valley and has 806 for the season.

Without Locklin, Huntington Beach’s already overmatched offense struggled against Fountain Valley’s defense.

The Barons held Huntington Beach to 24 yards rushing and 99 yards passing in the game.

Defensive lineman Mike Brady led the charge with two sacks and also knocked down a pass at the line of scrimmage. Mike Wilcox, another defensive lineman, and defensive back Doug Foster added interceptions for Fountain Valley (6-3, 3-1), which is a game behind Esperanza (8-1, 4-0) with one left.

Fountain Valley hosts Esperanza at Huntington Beach High at 7 p.m. Friday.

“We have the toughest game of the year next week,” Berg said. “But we’ve got a good football team. We’ve eliminated mistakes each week. We had to play this well to get better than we were last week.”

The Fountain Valley offense was led by quarterback Mike Lamar, who threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another, all in the first half. Andrew Medley rushed for 131 yards.

Lamar had touchdown passes of 29 yards to Brian Tuseth and 32 yards to Aaron Carter and also scrambled for a seven-yard touchdown, all in the second quarter.

The pass to Carter, who was wide open down the middle, came with 2 minutes 33 seconds left in the half and made the score, 27-0. Lamar was 11 of 19 for 161 yards.

Huntington Beach got a late lift from reserve quarterback Jeff Lineberger who completed four of seven passes for 87 yards.
